This species is mainly arctic, in Asia and N. America arctic-montane. In E. Asia and in N. America it occurs as subsp. pseudopolaris (Flod.) Hult. (marked separately on the map). European fossil records of interglacial and of Wiirm-glacial-late-glacial age outside the recent area are marked on the map (cf. Tralau in Ark. Bot., K. Vet. Ak., Stockh., 5/1963, map p. 561).
