Syn.: M. rolfii Nannf. (Nytt Mag. Bot. 3/1954). This arctic-montane species s. lat. is here represented by M. rossii s. str. (Spitsbergen to arctic Canada) and var. elegans (Cham. & Schlecht.) Hult. (Alaska to Rocky Mts.). With the occurrence on Spitsbergen taken into consideration M. rossii may be regarded as amphi-atlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 178 and map 160). The closely related M. pusilla Schischkin in C. Asia is also mapped.
