This mainly arctic species occurs from Fennoscandia through Siberia and N. America to Hudson Bay, where it is replaced by C. miliaris Michx (syn.: C. saxatilis var. miliaris [Michx] Bailey), occurring also in Greenland. Together these taxa have a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 18 and map 11).
