402 Eleocharis acicularis (L.) Roem. & Schult.

Syn.: Scirpus acicularis L.

This species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. It belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 114 and map 105). The population in SE. Asia is distinguished as subsp. longiseta (Svens.) Hult. In western U.S.A. and probably in Mexico a separate taxon also occurs, viz. var. occidentalis Svens. The limits of this species are partly tentatively drawn. It is reported from Australia.
