Syn.: Lychnis alba Mill., Melandrium album (Mill.) Garcke

This partly anthropochorous species is indigenous and widely distributed in Eurasia. The subsp. divaricata (Reich.) Walt. in the Mediterranean region is not included here. The species has been introduced into mast of N. Europe, lceland, Greenland, N. America, Tasmania and New Zealand. With its present distribution Silene alba is an amphi-atlantic plant with circumpolar tendency.
