This somewhat variable species originates from Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. It has been introduced into northernmost Europe, E. Asia, Australia, New Zealand, parts of Africa and N. and S. America. However, it is reported as native (closely related taxa?) in E. Asiatic areas. The present distribution is discontinuous circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 214 and map 205).
