This species is originally restricted to Europe, N. Africa and W. Asia. Three subspecies are distinguished in Fl. Eur. 2/1968, p. 327. The species has been introduced into several parts of the world, for instance S. Africa (subsp. macrorhyncha [Mey.] Rouy & Cam.), N. and S. America (Chile), Australia and New Zealand.
