This arctic(-subarctic)-montane species is rather variable. For lower taxa, for instance var. dovrensis Fr. in S. Norway, see Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 64. It belongs to the circumpolar plants (l. cit. and map 56). The closely related D. subamplexicaulis C. A. M. in the C. Asiatic mountains and D. arabisans Michx in eastern N. America is also mapped.
