This species has been divided into two fairly distinct subspecies, viz. subsp. obtusata in the subarctic and boreal parts of N. America and the Rocky Mts. and the arctic-montane subsp. oligantha (Turcz.). Hult. (syn.: P. parvula Schlechter, Lysiella oligantha [Turcz.] Nevski) which, as far as is known at present, has a disjunct distribution through Eurasia. On the whole the species s. lat. has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 158, 250f. and map 150).
