This species was originally mainly restricted to Europe. It is adventive in N. America (indigenous in Newfoundland according to Fernald) and New Zealand and in outlying localities in, for instance, N. Fennoscandia. It is reported among the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 130 and map 111). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 37.
