This arctic-montane species is partly amphi-atlantic (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 192 and map 174). The taxonomy of the N. American populations is complicated (cf. I. cit.). Among the taxa distinguished there, the geographically restricted var. nevadensis Hitchc. is mapped separately.
