74 Polypodium vulgare L.

This polymorphic species occurs mainly in Eurasia and N. America. For the sake of clearness the taxa treated here are presented on two maps (nos. 74 and 75). The species s. lat. includes, inter alia, the three taxa which are registered as species in Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 23, viz. the diploid P. australe Fee (syn.: P. serratum [Willd.] Sauter), the tetraploid P. vulgare L. (s. str.) and the hexaploid P. interjectum Shivas (syn.: P. prionodes Rothm.). Of these the first type is mapped here as subsp. serratum (S. and W. Europe). The second and third types are mapped together as subsp. vulgare. In Fennoscandia this taxon is less frequent in the north than in the south (cf. Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 67). The population on the Azores is distinguished as subsp. azoricum Vasc. (syn.: P. australe Fee; cf. Sjögren in Mem. Soc. Brot. 22/1973, p. 107). On map 74 the N. American and E. Asiatic subsp. virginianum (L.) Hult. is also represented. The species s. lat. (all subspecies on maps 74 and 75) has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 176 and maps 167 A and B). Cf. also world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 18.
