This species is restricted to saline waters in Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia and in E. Asia. The limitation of this species varies. The E. Asiatic population, for instance, is distinguished as Z. japonica Asch. & Graebn. Cf. also world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 26.
