This species occurs in Europe and adjacent areas towards the east and southeast. lwo varieties or subspecies are distinguished, viz. var. montana Lindq., occurring in Scotland, N. England and N. and W. Scandinavia, and var. scabra Lindq. in the other parts of the range. This species is commonly cultivated and often naturalized. Further, the E. Asiatic U. laciniata (Trautv.)
