This variable species is mainly restricted to Europe. It has been introduced into Iceland and several localities towards the north of Fennoscandia, where it occurs occasionally. In parts of the Iberian Peninsula subsp. graniticola Webb is distinguished. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 201.
