1684 Odontites verna (Bell.) Dum. and O. vulgaris Moench

Syn.: O. rubra Bess. and O. verna subsp. serotina (Dum.) Corb.

This critical group of taxa (O. litoralis Fr. see no. 1685) occurs in large parts of Eurasia and in N. America (introduced). Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 268 f. regards these taxa as one species with three subspecies (incl. O. litoralis). The North European 0dontites taxa have been investigated by Britt Snogerup (Watsonia 14/1982, p. 34-39), who reports three species, O. verna (Bell.) Dum., O. vulgaris Moench and O. litoralis Fr. (no. 1685). Thus, the present map is a composite map with O. verna and O. vulgaris. While waiting for further investigation, the drawing of separate maps must be deferred. However, the Northwest European Odontites taxa have recently been treated by Snogerup in Acta Bot. Fenn. 124/1983, where separate maps are given of O. verna and O. vulgaris, showing a strikingly similar distribution pattern in Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland (maps p. 5 and 7).
