This species is widely but somewhat disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The population in the C. Asiatic mountains is somewhat diverging in morphology (S. macrophylla Turcz. in Fl. USSR). In Greece, Asia Minor, Caucasus and Iran var. pilosior Trautv. is distinguished (tentatively mapped here). The species is reported among the amphiatlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 236 and map 217), but it may also be considered circumpolar. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 219.
