This species occurs in Eurasia and N. America. In eastern N. America var. angustisegmentum Pease & Moore is distinguished. This perhaps often overlooked species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 256 and map 237), although it has a tendency towards circumpolar distribution.
