This species occurs as a more or less native plant in Europe and parts of Asia. Its dispersal has been favoured by man. Thus, it has been introduced into several parts of the world, for instance N. America. It belongs now to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 214 and map 204).
