This species is widely distributed in Asia and partly Europe and N. America. The dot on the Kola Peninsula indicates a single find on a railway embankment. The population in northwestern N. America is distinguished as subsp. purpurata (Greene) Hitchc. & Maguire (cf. Porsild and Cody 1980, map 519). The subsp. australis Hitchc. & Maguire in western N. America is also mapped.
