This species has an almost global distribution in temperate and tropical regions, although with large gaps. The American population is distinguished as subsp. parviflorus (Raf.) Hult. The species has a discontinuous circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 148 and map 139). Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1978, p. 344.
