This widespread species occurs along the sea coasts and on saline inland soil in Eurasia and N. America. Its distribution in Asia is incompletely known (cf. no. 180 J compressus). The population in N. Norway and N. Russia is distinguished as subsp. atrofuscus (Rupr.) Printz (mapped tentatively in Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 450). It is also reported from the interior of Asia (Fl. Aret. URSS 4, p. 15). For other subspecies in Europe see Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 106. The species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 172 and map 154).
