Within this arctic-montane species at least two taxa may be distinguished, viz. subsp. triglumis whith a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 48, 214 and map 42) and subsp. albescens (Lange) Hult. in C. and E. Asia, N. America and on Greenland. The taxonomy and distribution of these taxa in N. America are, however, somewhat uncertain (l. cit.). Porsild & Cody 1980, p. 194, report only subsp. albescens for Canada.
