This species is totally restricted to Europe, where it occurs mainly in the N. and C. parts. A separate taxon, subsp. ornithopoides (Hausm.) Nym., is distinguished in the mountains of C. and S. Europe (cf. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 311). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 75.
