Within this polymorphic sea-shore species four subspecies are distinguished in Europe (Fl. Eur. 1/1964 p. 343), viz. subsp. maritima along the W. European coasts, subsp. baltica (Jordan) Hyl. along the coasts of Skagerrak, Kattegat and the Baltic region, subsp. aegyptiaca (Willd.) Nym. around the Mediterranean Sea and subsp. euxina (Pobed.) Nyárády at the Black Sea. The closely related C. edentula (Bigel.) Hook. occurs as subsp. islandica (Gand.) A. & D. Löve (syn.: C. maritima subsp. islandica Hyl.) along the coasts of Iceland, the Faeroes, N. Norway and NW. Russia, subsp. edentula along the coasts of the Azores (Fajal) and eastern N. America, subsp. lacustris (Fem.) Hult. at the Great Lakes and subsp. californica (Heller) Hult. along the Pacific coasts. - It should be observed that there is still some taxonomic confusion as to the abovementioned two species and their subspecies. Consequently, the mapping of the separate taxa cannot be considered as definite. Cf. the Cakile map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 177.
