The taxonomy of this polymorphic species, or complicated group of taxa, does not seem to be sufficiently clarified (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 210). For that reason, it is impossible to present the distribution of these taxa. However, known localities of the closely related F. auriculata Drob. (obviously syn. to F. ovina subsp. alaskana Holmen) and F. kolymensis Drob. are marked. Human activity has favoured the dispersal. The species s. lat. has been introduced into N. America, southernmost S. America and New Zealand. The closely related species F. vivipara (L.) Sm. (or subspecies) has an artic-subarctic distribution (cf. no. 231). It is obviously included in the map of F. ovina in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 36.
