This Eurasiatic species is rather polymorphic. According to Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 214, the C. European population can be divided into three subspecies. Within the E. European and Asiatic population several lower taxa are distinguished, in Fl. USSR 7 /1970, p. 146/114 considered as species, for instance D. cryophilum Nevski (Kolguyev Island) and D. ochotense Nevski (E. Siberia). See also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 157. The species is cultivated in gardens and has sometimes escaped (Fennoscandia).
