The range of this species is limited to parts of Asia and N. America. However, the map includes some fossil finds in Europe (Sweden and Poland), which justify its insertion in the category of N. European plants. In C., E. and SE. Asia the species is represented by var. vestita (Wallich) Milde. This species belongs to the circumpolar plants according to Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 166 and map 158. The distribution is, however, very disjunct. Osmunda cinnamomea L. has in principle the same distribution (cf. Hultén, 1. cit. and map 157), although it is not recorded from N. Europe.
