This species is indigenous in Eurasia. As an anthropochorous plant it is widely spread outside the original distribution area, which is tentatively marked by the broken line on the map. It has also been introduced into N. America, where it is widely distributed, partly into S. America, Japan and New Zealand. The present distribution is incompletely circumpolar (Hultén, Circumpol.
