This species is mainly restricted to Europe. However, it is also locally found in eastern N. America (Little Miquelon Island). Thus the species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 156 and map 138). It has been introduced into New Zealand. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 85.
