Syn.: Lychnis apetala L., Melandrium apetalum (L.) Fenzl

This widespread, polymorphic species includes the following subspecies mapped here: subsp. wahlbergella in the Scandinavian mountains, subsp. arctica (Fr.) Hult. with a circumpolar, arcticmontane distribution, subsp. himalayensis (Rohrb.) Bocq. in the Central Asiatic mountains, subsp. montana (Wats.) Hult. in the S. Rocky Mts. and subsp. attenuata in the N. Rocky Mts. and scattered in the northwest (cf. Porsild and Cody 1980, map 496). The distribution boundaries between the subspecies are not everywhere clear. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 325 f. and map 54).
