This species originates from Europe and adjacent parts of Asia. It has been spread by man within and beyond that area, for instance to Fennoscandia, Iceland and N. and S. America. Although not a circumpolar plant this species is reported among them in Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 192 and map 184. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map, p. 263.
