Within this polymorphic and widespread species several lower taxa are distinguished (for Europe see int. al. Atlas Fl. Eur. 1/1972, p. 69), among which var. vespertinum Jeps. from Califomia is mapped separately. Outside the map area this species is widely distributed, for instance in S. Africa, C. and S. America, Australia, New Zealand. Cf. world map in Meusel et al. 1965, p. 13. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 138 and 130).
