This sea-shore species s. lat. has a disjunct distribution. Subsp. scoticum has an amphi-atlantic distribution (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 294 and map 276). Subsp. Hulténii (Fem.) Hult. occurs in the Pacific region of E. Asia and N. America.
