Syn.: int. al. R. paucistamineus Tausch, Batrachium trichophyllum v. d. Bosch

This species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. The lines are tentatively drawn. In Fl. Eur. 1/1964, p. 237, it is divided into t wo subspecies, viz. subsp. trichophyllus with a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 88, 340 and map 80), occurring mainly S of the following subspecies, and subsp. eradicatus (Laest.) C. D. K. Cook (syn.: int. al. R. trichophyllus subsp. lutulentus [Perr. et Song.] Vierh., Batrachium confervoides Fr.), an arctic-alpine plant with a circumpolar distribution (I. cit.). Subsp. trichophyllus also occurs in SE. Australia and Tasmania.
