This insufficiently known, arctic-montane species seems to have a wide, almost circumpolar distribution. The population on Iceland, Greenland and in N. America has been distinguished as subsp. porsildiana (Polun.) Löve & Löve (syn.: C. capillaris subsp. porsildiana [Polun.] B öcher). For the distribution of other closely related taxa within the C. capillaris group, see Hultén, Circumpol. I, map 48. The map is definitely incomplete. For that reason, the total range cannot be outlined.
