This widespread species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 132 and map 123), although there seem to be wide gaps in C. and E. Siberia. The population in S. Africa and in Madagascar is distinguished as subsp. capensis Rohrb. and that in SE. Asia as var. orientalis (Presl) Rohrb. or T. orientalis Presl (introduced into Australia).
