This mainly arctic-montane species has a disjunct distribution in Europe and Asia. It is extinct in Scotland and on the Estonian mainland. The closely related P. variegata Turcz. in E. Asia is mapped separately. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 416.
