This variable species occurs in most of Europe "and W. Siberia. It is replaced eastwards through Siberia to Japan, Kamchatka and Alaska by subsp. trinii (Turcz.) Hult. (syn.: A. canina var. rubra Trautv.); cf. Hultén, Fl. Alaska Neighbor. Terr., p. 98. Subsp. montana (Hartm.) Hartm. (syn.: A. vinealis Schreb.), probably mainly occurring in NW. and C. Europe (cf. Fl. Eur. 5/1980, p. 233), is also considered to be native in eastern N. America (Fernald, Manual 1950, p. 163, and Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 208). Totally the species is an almost circumpolar plant (Hultén, op. cit., p. 208 and map 197). Two closely related species are also mapped, viz. A. planifolia C. Koch in Caucasus and Armenia and A. anadyrensis Soz. in a small area in E. Siberia. Furthermore, the range of another closely related taxon, unknown to Hultén (l. cit.), is also marked tentatively on the map (Himalaya etc.). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 47.
