This widespread species is represented by subsp. zosterifolius in Eurasia and by subsp. zosteriformis (Fem.) Hult. (syn.: P. zosterifolius var. americanus Benn.) in N. America and at least in Kamchatka. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 168 and map 159).
