This arctic-montane species is widely but disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. It is a rather uniform species. However, the Japanese population is distinguished as var. stipitatum Yabe. Regarding the E. American population, the species belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 238 and map 220), but it may also be considered as a circumpolar species.
