This rather variable, widespread plant occurs in brackish sea water and alkaline inland waters through large parts of Eurasia and N. America. The map is partly incomplete. Finds of P liocene, interglacial and postglacial age in Europe are also marked on the map. The species has a discontinuous circumpolar distribition (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 144 and map 135). It occurs also outside the map area, for instance in C. Africa, S. Asia, Australia, Polynesia and the Galapagos Islands.
