Syn.: Lycopodium tristachyum Pursh, Diphasium complanatum (L.) Rothm. subsp. chamaecyparissus, Diphasiastrum tristachyum (Pursh) Holub

The map shows the total range of this well-known subspecies (Europe and N. America) with its var. boreale (NW. Canada) and the newly described subsp. montellii Kukkonen in Ann. Bot. Fenn. 4/1967, p. 469, and 7 /1970, p. 142 (obviously isolated in N. Europe). As to the taxonomy of the subspecies cf. also L. Hämet-Ahti and I. Kukkonen in Ann. Bot. Fenn. 21/1984, p. 209. The presentation of the distribution of the subsp. montellii is here based on Atlas Fl. Eur. 1/1972, map 8. Some of these northern occurrences were included in Hultén's map 39 in The amphi-atlantic plants (1958). The subsp. chamaecyparissus has an amphi-atlantic distribution (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 58 and map 39).
