This arctic-montane species (with its subsp. arnellii Scheutz scattered in arctic Eurasia and Alaska) is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Pre-Würmian and late-glacial localities in Europe are mapped. The species belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 24 and map 16).
