8 Selaginella selaginoides (L.) Link
Syn.: Selaginella spinulosa A. Braun, S. ciliata (Lam.) Opiz
This mainly arctic-montane species is widely, somewhat disjunctly distributed in Eurasia and N. America. As it is easily overlooked, the records of the distribution are still incomplete as regards large areas in Asia and N. America. It belongs to the amphi-atlantic plants according to Hultén, Amphiatl., p. 240 and map 222, although it shows a tendency towards circumpolar distribution. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1965, map p. 9. Fossil occurrences of Pleistocene and Holocene age are marked separately within the European area (Tralau in Bot. Not. [Lund] 114/1961, p. 230, and in Ark. Bot., K. Sv. Vet. Ak. [Stockh.] ser. 2:5/1963, p. 542 ff.; Hultén, Atlas 1971, map 8).
