This polymorphic species occurs in Europe and parts of Asia. Subsp. repens is confined to Europe. Subsp. rosmarinifolia (L.) C. Hartm., often considered as a separate species, has a wider, Eurasiatic distribution. These two taxa seem to hybridize considerably. Further, the map contains the subsp. schunganica (Goerz) Skvorts. in the C. Asiatic mountains, the closely related S. brachypoda (Trautv.) Kom. in E. Asia and S. subopposita Miq. in Japan.
