Sanicula europaea
1383 Sanicula europaea L.
This species is restricted to Europe and adjacent parts of Africa and Asia. Further, several other closely related species, belonging to the same complex (more likely subspecies of S. europaea), are mapped, viz. S. elata Hamilt. and S. chinensis Bge in S. and E. Asia, and S. marylandica L., S. canadensis L. and S. trifoliata Bickn. in N. America and, finally, S. azorica Guthn., endemic to the Azores. This S. europaea complex has a circumpolar distribution (Hultén, Circumpol. Il, p. 362f. and map 138). Some of these taxa also occur in mountains of the tropical region. Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 304.
