1486 Armeria maritima (Mill.) Willd.
This polymorphic species is widely distributed in Eurasia and N. America. Fl. Eur. 3/1972, p. 32f., reports eight subspecies. Among these, the map shows the distribution of subsp. maritima (syn.: A. vulgaris Willd.) in Europe and S. Greenland, the arctic-circumpolar subsp. labradorica (Wallr.) Hult. and subsp. alpina (Willd.) P. Silva in the Alps and other S. and SE. European mountains. Further, some extra-European subspecies are mapped, viz. subsp. arctica (Cham.) Hult., subsp. interior (Raup) Pors. and subsp. californica (Boiss.) Pors. in the Pacific E. Asia and N. America, C. Canada and W. U.S.A., respectively. Totally the species belongs to the circumpolar plants. However, it is reported among the amphi-atlantic plants (Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 106 and map 88). Cf. also Meusel et al. 1978, map p. 344.
