707 Montia fontana L.

According to Walters (Watsonia 3/1953, p. 1 ff.) four taxa can be distinguished in Europe within this polymorphic species, viz. subsp. fontana (syn.: M. lamprosperma Cham.), subsp. variabilis Walt. (syn.: M. rivularis auct.), subsp. intermedia (Beeby) Walt. (syn.: subsp. amporitana Sennen and M. lusitanica Samp.) and subsp. chondrosperma (Fenzl) Walt. (syn.: M. verna auct. and M. minor auct.), of which the latter is presented on map no. 708. In N. America subsp. variabilis occurs in the east, subsp. fontana in the rest of the mapped area. In pacific America same very closely, related species are distinguished. The species s. lat. shows a discontinuous circumpolar pattern. It is, however, recorded among the amphiatlantic plants by Hultén, Amphi-atl., p. 258 and map 239. The species (probably subsp. fontana) also occurs in several places outside the map area. For more details concerning the European distribution, see Atlas Fl. Eur. 5/1980, map 662ff. The present map should probably be corrected in accordance to theses maps.
