Within this mainly boreal-montane species a few lower taxa have been distinguished, int. al. subsp. bracteatum (Mahl.) Hult. through N. America and parts of E. Asia and var. islandicum (Lindl.) M. Schultze, which has a disjunct arctic-subarctic occurrence, at present insufficiently verified. It is not always possible to distinguish this taxon from subsp. viride. Thus, the border lines drawn on the map are far from exact. The species s. lat. belongs to the circumpolar plants (Hultén, Circumpol. I, p. 76, 246f. and map 68).
